Andrea and Martin Swinton at Take-A-Boo Emporium are Our Faves Fans

November 25, 2007

topnav_logo.jpgOne of our fave new websites is OurFaves Toronto where you can list your favourite places in the city. If you post enough faves you can become a featured faver like us

It’s fun to let people in our your favourite restaurants, shops, hair salons and neighbourhoods. Plus, we like it because it gives us an opportunity to promote our favourite neighbourhood North Toronto.

I’ve entered a contest they are running right now. I’d be thrilled to win it and be able to take some friends to our favourite restaurant Celestin.

German Tradition of Grampus and Pickle Christmas Ornaments Continues at Take-A-Boo Emporium

November 18, 2007

Our Grampus and pickle ornaments continue to be popular this year.

In Germany, the birthplace of the Christmas traditions, a pickle was hidden in the tree. Whichever child found it, received another gift. Pickle3-pickles.jpg ornaments carry on this tradition. An extra present continues to be appealing to children today, as families are buying these ornaments to continue this tradition.

grampus-in-bowl2.jpgGrampus or devil head ornaments were put on trees to remind naughty children that St. Nicholas may be inclined to pass over them. Seems parents from  generations gone by were interested in tricks to keep their kids in line.

We also carry some other ornaments that come from German tradition.

Peas in a pod were given to newlyweds and signifed fertility. Peas in a pod ornaments carry on the tradition.

A purse was given as a good luck charm for a new year filled with money. Purse ornaments are still popular with ladies today.purse.jpg

A small keepsake card is included with these ornaments and tells the story.

Martin Swinton appears on Rogers Television’s new Daytime Toronto with Carla Bosacki and Riaz Meghji

November 12, 2007

blog.gifMartin appeared on the first episode of the relaunched Rogers Television’s Daytime with hosts Carla Bosacki and Riaz Meghji. A few years ago Martin was a semi-regular guests on the show. The program was pulled from the air, retool and relaunched today.

Martin chatted about antique lighting and hopes to return to the show for future segments.

He’s the only person I know who is more comfortable doing live television rather than tape. He’s a one-shot kinda guy who feels stilted and unnatural if he has to do a second take. Strange but true.

Canada Post’s  suggested holiday season mailing dates  are fast approaching. Surface deadlines for many locations have already come and gone.

Toronto Star’s Trish Crawford article on retail music got it right

November 4, 2007

Trish Crawford wrote in Saturday’s Toronto Star about the importance of music in retail stores. The article resonated with us. Everyday in our antiques shop we hear positive comments from customers and passer-by’s who are drawn to the vintage jazz from the twenties through the forties that we play. This old time music is a natural fit with the gramaphone.gifantiques and vintage finds we sell.

We see the power of this music everyday; from the frail elderly gentleman whose eyes well up with tears as taps his toe to the sounds of Gracie Fields to a toddler dancing in front of the shop to a tune from the Count Basie Orchestra.

The right music for the right retailer can provide a powerful positive shopping experience. People tell us that they make a point to walk on our side of Avenue Road so that they can hear snippets of songs as they walk by. We never thought our music would become the signature that it has for our shop.

Some of our favourite artists are: The Ambrose Brothers Orchestra, Fred Astaire, Connee Boswell, Count Basie and his Orchestra, Al Jolson, Nat King Cole, Louis Prima  Bea Wain,  Gracie Fields, Vera Lynn, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra.

Plus, we are always on the look out to add to our collection of old time artists such as Marlene Dietrich, Maurice Chevalier, Matteo Salvatore, Imperio Argentina, Orquestas de Jose Basso Y Alfredo D’Angelis who sing in languages other than English.
